Basic Information and Process
When building format facet logic, Pika references a combination of information from the MARC record. We reference location codes, i-types, and material types. Formats can be determined by material type, location type, collection code, i-Types, etc. At Marmot we cannot use these alone, because they are either not discreet enough, or they conflict.
The process for format determination always starts by examining the MARC Leader to determine whether or not the leader position 6 is J for an initial determination of MusicRecording. After this determination, Pika will reference mapping based on other fields in the MARC, as described below. Typically, information in the leader field is used for format determination as a last option. When using the MARC leader, characters are counted using MARC record position counting that is similar to program position counting. Similarly, the 007 is the second to last option for format determination and is only applied if format determination cannot be referenced from any other MARC fields.

Format > Readable Labels Translations
There are translation maps of formats that are encoded into Pika. Below are the intermediary values that will be displayed in Pika for all the different formats. Discovery Partners may have unique mapping for their formats. This list is the default method.
eContent IType Translation Map
Depending on the itypes assigned to ILS eContent records, we can determine the type of material of ILS eContent. This is material that is not side loaded.
Below are Marmot’s iTypes for ILS eContent and their translations.
Value | Translation |
* | Unknown |
110 | eAudiobook |
111 | eVideo |
112 | Web Content |
125 | eMagazine |
188 | eBook |
215 | Web Content |
216 | Web Content |
249 | Web Content |
254 | eMusic |
For sideloaded eContent, we typically determine format using the vendor provided MARC records. If the vendor records have the format listed as a book, we would say it is an eBook. It is listed as a DVD or movie, we will say it is an eVideo.
Format Category
The Format Category is a more general format search filter/facet than the format facet. We group into a couple of different categories (Books, eBook, Audio Books, Music and Movies). Anything that is blank is “other.”
These categories are used for the icons at the top of the Pika display.
