Bounced Email Handling
There are three types of bounced emails:
The patron’s email is not valid.
The patron’s email inbox is full (soft bounce). A soft bounce means that the email hasn’t been delivered, but LX Starter is still attempting to send it and will continue to attempt to send it until the email is delivered or turns into a hard bounce. The patron’s account is not blocked if they have a soft block.
An invalid email (hard bounce). A hard bounce means there is an issue with the email server or the email failed. Notices will no longer be sent to that email once it is on the list of hard-blocked emails. In addition, a red alert is added to the patron record in LX Starter. A note is added to the patron record in Sierra.
If notices are returned because of invalid email addresses, LX Starter takes the following actions:
Patron records that contain an invalid email address display a red alert message.
LX Starter automatically sets the contact method set in the library settings.
LX Starter stops sending emails to email addresses that have hard bounced. This prevents your library from accumulating high bounce rates.
Reenable Email Notices for Patrons after an Email Bounced
To reenable email notices for patrons who have a bounced message in LX Starter and Sierra, update the patron’s email address either in LX Starter or Sierra. If the email address is correct but is still bouncing, the patron may need to use a different email.
Spam Handling
If patrons mark emails from the library as spam, LX Starter automatically sets the contact method for the patron to the default contact method set in the library settings.
Reenable Email Notices after Patron Marks Notice as Spam
To reenable email notices after a patron marks a notice from LX Starter as spam, update the contact method in the patron record in Sierra.
