Field Group Tags (Cataloging)

Field groups are a system unique to III’s Sierra library system. They allow more control over the way MARC tags are searched and matched. Each MARC field in every MARC record is assigned to a particular field group.

Field Groups

When records are loaded they are assigned to a field group automatically. Almost all MARC tags in the Marmot database are consistently paired with a single field group as described in the table on this page.

You have the option to display tags instead of labels:

FYI: this option is in the Editor tab of Preferences in the Edit menu.

Setting Field Groups

While most field groups will be set automatically by the load profile when the record is loaded, you have to set them manually if you add a field or create a record from scratch.

When you add a new field it will first ask for the field group tag:

Just press the letter for the tag, then you can fill in the MARC information:

If you add a field with the Insert button, you will get a pull down menu to choose the field group tag:

Note: this is an easy way to view all the field group tags and their labels.

Changing Field Groups

To change a field group tag, put your cursor on it and press the letter for the new tag.

It can be tricky to select the tag. You can try putting your cursor in the MARC tag box and left arrow over to the field group tag.

This works the same whether you have labels or tags displayed.

Default Field Group Tags

These are the field group tags assigned by the Marmot load profiles. All MARC records should follow the same pattern.
