Marmot Managed Windows Workstation Guidelines

Maintenance Schedule:

  • Windows workstations should be left on every night for “Software Updates” and “Windows Updates”. 

  • We recommend logging out or rebooting staff machines at the end of the day.

  • Monitors can be left on or shut off, as preferred. Be warned, pressing the power button on a monitor twice a day can eventually break the mechanism.

Software Updates: Scheduled nightly, 12:15am-3am.

Windows Updates: Scheduled nightly, 12:15am-3am
Security and Critical updates for the computer operating system, as well as Microsoft Office products.
 

Desktop Workstations

Desktop Workstations should be left on in order for the maintenance cycles to occur. Monitors can be turned off to preserve power. However, library staff should be aware of any All-in-one workstations where the computer is built into the monitor. In these cases, the entire system should be left on.

 

Laptop Workstations

Laptops should be left on, and plugged into power, overnight as much as possible. Optimally, laptops should be left on for at least one Software Update cycle, and one Windows Update cycle. While it is acceptable for systems to miss a week or two of updates, going too long without updates will affect the security and functionality of these systems. .
