Regan Byrd Anti-Oppression & Allyship Training Series

A commitment to diversity, equity, social justice, and inclusion requires more than one-off webinars or statements of support; it requires deep examination and a search for actionable steps.  Marmot is pleased to announce a new training series, free to all member library staff and Marmot staff, regarding allyship and anti-oppression.  This 6-part intensive online training series is being led by Regan Byrd, a speaker many of you may know from CAL’s EDSJI conference and Marmot’s MUG keynote address last year.  This training series will provide that opportunity for attendees to learn methods they can bring into their daily work, and to help Marmot as a consortium be more deliberate in this area.  Below is a detailed description of each session in the series. Power, Privilege, and Social Identity

What exactly is privilege, and what does that mean in the context of one's identity? What identities are relevant to the discussion of privilege and oppression within the U.S.?

This training will give you a foundational understanding of all the identities that have been shaped by systems of oppression in the U.S., as well definitions for power and privilege. Participants will also complete an activity called the "social identity wheel" to deepen their understanding of their own identity.

The 4 I’s of Oppression

Now that you have some understanding of social identity,  you may be wondering, what exactly is oppression? How does racism, sexism, homophobia, etc really show up in society?  Is it just how someone feels subjectively based on how they are treated, or is it measurable and traceable in objective ways?

This training will give you a more complex and holistic understanding of oppression, specifically anti-black racism within the U.S., and will present attendees with a model for understanding how oppression functions in society, called the 4 I's of oppression.

Allyship and the Pitfalls

Once you understand how oppression operates in society, and the deep harm it causes, your next question is likely to be: how do I intervene on oppression, especially if it involves an identity where I have privilege? This is what is known as allyship, or being an accomplice against oppression, and this training will present you with a model for understanding effective allyship as well as bystander intervention.

Attendees will also learn about the "pitfalls of allyship", a unique list from Regan Byrd Consulting detailing the common mistakes or "errors" those looking to practice allyship often make. Examples involving library customer service and community support will also be used during this training.

Anti-Oppressive Strategy in Nonprofits and Libraries

Now that you understand what you can do as an individual and a bystander, it is critical that you understand what you can do as an institution, to act against oppressive systems and reduce harm.

This final training in our training series will give you tools and models for understanding what it means to be an anti-oppressive organization, most specifically an anti-racist organization, and how you can put that understanding into practice. Examples involving library customer service, library operations, and community support will also be used during this training.
