Q & A Section

Sierra

Q: Can you please repeat what placing a zero in the Password reset field does?

A: 0 and missing field = triggered field (patron gets prompted to reset in Pika). Anything else in that field = untriggered (patron will not get prompted).

Q: So when we reset a temporary password ourselves, are we using the formula of 3 letters and 4 digits every time?

A: No. You do not have to use this formula when creating a temporary password for your patrons. You could use any temporary password. The most important thing is to make sure to tell the patron the temporary password.

Q: What if a patron refuses to give an email address?

A: If the patron either refuses to give an email address or does not have an email address, this is where they will need help from library staff whenever they forgot their password.

Q: Are the passwords case-sensitive?

A: Yes, passwords are case-sensitive.

Q: When will patrons be prompted to renew their password?

A: After the passwords go live all patrons will be prompted to reset their password once. Beyond that, we do not have any plans to force annual password renewals or anything along those lines. Each library can decide if they want to set up a periodic password reset.

Q: Can you talk more about what will happen for the deadline for patrons to reset their passwords from the default password?

A: Marmot will take any default passwords that have not been changed and randomize those passwords. If the patron has never logged into Pika they will be locked out. To unlock those accounts, library staff must go into the patron’s record in Sierra and set a temporary password, and reset the password trigger field to zero or remove the password trigger field. You can also allow the patron to set their own password in Sierra as well. As long as the patron has an email address in their Sierra record, they could use the forgot password link in Pika to reset their password.

Pika

Q: Will Masquerade Mode work for patrons who have never logged in to Pika?

A:  No. Masquerade Mode will not work for a patron who has never logged into Pika. Patrons have to have logged into the catalog at least once for library staff to masquerade as them. You can log in as the patron using the default password or a temporary password that you set for them. You do not have to reset your password in Pika. Afterward, you should be able to masquerade as them. To explain further,  Pika has a separate database for patrons who have logged in. Marmot is telling Pika the default passwords because otherwise, Pika acts as if none of your patrons have logged into Pika. This means patrons who have already logged into Pika at least once will not have to log in again for library staff to masquerade as them. Marmot suggests that with homebound patrons you log into their Pika accounts before the passwords go live with their name and barcode to put that patron in the Pika database.

Q: When a patron resets their password in Pika, does it also send an email to the address on record to tell them that their password was updated?

A: It does not. The only email generated occurs when the patron clicks the reset my password link from Pika. There is no email confirmation that follows.

OverDrive

Q: If the patron does not change their password to Overdrive within 24 hours, what happens to their account?

A: The 24 hours is not a deadline. It is just a recheck against the Sierra patron database. So sometime within 24 hours the Libby app will recheck Sierra and determine that a password is populated in the patron record. The patron will need to log in with whatever that password is. You can see an example of this process by saving your login on the Libby app and then changing your library barcode in Sierra. Sometime in 24 hours, Libby will prompt you to enter your new library barcode number.

Q: When a patron is prompted to sign in to Libby with the password is there any language that explains where to get their password and how to update it?

A: Unfortunately, there is nothing in Libby to instruct patrons about their passwords. OverDrive needed a webpage from a mobile-ready site which Marmot does not have at this time as a landing page. It would have been a link in Libby that patrons would need to open up in a browser to read the information.

General questions

Q: Can you talk about the Zoom office hours for the Sierra password go-live?

A: Marmot is offering some Zoom-based office hours. The Zoom meeting will be open and library staff can just pop in at any time throughout the day to get some support or get your questions answered. Marmot is offering Zoom office hours on 03/28, 03/29, and 03/30. The Zoom link will be publicized through the Marmot password updates emails that Adam has been sending out to Allpoints. Our plan is to help you navigate Sierra to change the password for your patron. Marmot will not be changing any Sierra patron passwords for you.
